Bonus anyone ?

People always have some things which bring them memories of their childhood days. It may be little crayons ,comic books ,old commercials ,cassettes or push pencil (As my friend recalls ‘ook Pencil). As for me , it is that blue-capped plastic bottle filled with (what Monica Geller called ) ‘little drops of heaven‘. I am talking about ‘Bonus‘,a one-upon-a-time children’s health drink. It is totally extinct today and I wonder why.It was my favourite drink .

It had the taste of Milky Bar ‘chew’ chocolate when you swallow it ,not when you chew it .Yeah, I remember the exact taste. The problem is that I can’t find any pictures of the “Bonus” bottle. None of the people I know seem to remember such a drink actually existed. I would be really happy if at least one person knows what I am talking about .Have you ever tasted ‘Bonus’ ? If you have tasted and n*t liked it (I don’t wanted say the you-know-what word ), oh you are deemed unfit to be my friend 😛 😛

P.S: What kind of person decides to put Bonus out of business? I mean seriously..

We moved to US in mid 90s, I was a big fan of boost, of course there were other options but I’ve never heard of Bonus. May be it wasn’t available in the part of Gujarat where we lived! If it was that great, I missed out on that one. 😦
Yeah you right. Doesn’t make a business sense to out bonus out of business.

    • vandysnape says:

Oh yeah .. Boost is really cool and quite famous too … (I remember Sachin’s ads 🙂 ) Boost and Bournvita taste almost the same but I like them both 🙂

  2. I agree with the idea that there are some special things which are powerful in the memory and can immediately transport you back in time. I dont know about Bonus…remember Bournvita and Boost though.

For me such an item would be a pack of biscuits called Bakeman’s. It has disappeared too!

  3. Balu says:

BONUS! Hey I used to drink that when I was young (till 5th std).
I think it has blue label color around the bottle and the white Bonus font.
Me and my bro loves to drink that when we were in Tirunelveli. But later when we moved to madurai and rajapalayam, we were not able to find it any shops. I have asked my friends and they replied…What??huh! So I thought it is available only in Tirunelveli 😀

You are the only person who remembers about it! I like you vandhana!!!! Thanks for sharing!

PS: You brought back the memories of Tirunelveli, my childhood girl friend Rashmi, her younger sister Sharmi (My brother’s girl friend) and her mother who introduced Bonus to my MOM 🙂

PS1: He is a stupid kind of person who stopped making Bonus 🙂

    • vandysnape says:

wow Balu .. At last some one who knows Bonus’ legacy … 🙂 I found another friend of mine who used to drink Bonus , through this post .. You seem to remember the exact description of Bonus . Especially the white Bonus font .. Great !!

  5. Cactus Cooler soda reminds me of summer as a kid! It doesn’t exist anymore but I can still see the can in my memory.

    • vandysnape says:

  7. Sash says:

I really don’t know how it looks and tastes. I heard the name when my dad told that he would bring a new powder – not sure whether it’s the same one. I am never a fan of milk, etc…

I felt the similar stuff – when the chewing gums – ‘brooklyn’ and ‘big fun’ (fav cricket and run collection stuff etc…)… I still remember so well, the taste of brooklyn which i had in my 4th standard. I didn’t get that at all, anytime after that…

I almost spent 3k to 4k for tasting diff chewing gums – even imported, but never got that flavor anywhere again!!

    your posts are so fresh!!

Sorry! I have always been a “Coffee” boy since childhood. However, reading some comments about Tirunelveli brought back my childhood memories …. I grew up there till +2 right on the banks of Thamirabarani. The list of places is never ending: Tirunelveli, Ravanasamudram, Kadayam, Tenkasi, Melagaram, Courtallam, Papanasam, the paddy fields …… Just a thought abt these places make me feel as if I am in “Courtallam Saaral”. I will be elated to show all these places to my daughter. I apologize; I understand this is irrelevant to the original post abt the drink. I cannot resist writing this as someone (Mr.Balu) mentioned “nostalgic” comments about Tirunelveli. Thanks to the original author who made me feel so.

    • vandysnape says:

I’ve visited Tirunalveli once and I really loved it.. Thamarabarani was beautiful . You must be lucky to have grown up in that place 🙂 I’m this post (indirectly) brought back some good memories of yours 🙂

Hey guess what brought me to your blog? I was looking for Bonus and landed here, LOL. I was a wee lad when I first drank it. Bought it maybe twice and it vanished permanently from the stores. It’s color was just like milky bar desaturated yellow. I have heard it was made from Soy. Damn what I wouldn’t give to drink Bonus once more.

  10. eightbeats says:

Searching for Bonus health drink… I landed here…But very sad to hear that the product is stopped. I loved this drink and almost 13 to 15 years back, I used to get sleep only after having a cup of bonus milk. Any idea the same formula used in other products? please share if anyone explored.

    • vandysnape says:

Hi Roopa 🙂 As far as I know there aren’t any products with the same taste or formula. But will definitely put it down here if I find any ! 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by !

  16. Mousumi Choudhury Maity says:

I was searching “Bonus the health drink” and found your caption “Bonus anyone”!!! I’m from Kolkata. I can still remember the day when some Bonus guys came to my school for their Bonus promoting campaign. During the tiffin time each of us was given a cup of bonus. I had my cup , took a sip and it was great.. Some of my friends had issue with milk or milk like things so I deliberately had their cups of Bonus too. I returned back home and made my maa so much annoyed that she bought Bonus the very next day although my health drink for that month was yet not finished. I loved Bonus so much.. It tasted heavenly. Had hardly few files than it was vanished. Tried to find it but there was no existence of it. I’m 27 now and till now I prefer health drinks over tea or coffee. This year I got married and my husband brings Boost every month for me.. 🙂 But still I miss Bonus and more than that I always repent that since my childhood I found none who shares the same feeling about it or even has at least heard about it… So good to hear from you…

    • vandysnape says:

I’m so glad to hear from you too, Mousumi 🙂
I never really thought I’d get this much response from people. Through this post I came to know that I wasn’t alone in my liking for Bonus. Reading fond memories of it such as yours here really brings a smile on my face. I’ve switched to Bournvita since then, but it is not the same ! 🙂

Again, thank you so much for stopping by my blog 🙂

this link might help you guy’s get some information about why they stopped bonus ! Also another interesting news was that they started selling bonus in another name “nestle Nesvita Soya Bean Milk”:) but i don’t know whether it is true,,, pls correct me if am wrong :):):););)

    • vandysnape says:

I can’t believe I found this! I loved Nestle Bonus!! It’s the best milk add-on that I’ve ever had! I couldn’t take it when my local pharmacist told me that Nestle would be discontinuing Bonus. I urged my dad to buy four packs for me. Post, Bonus’ sad departure I tried Amulya, and other dairy creamer from Amul but nothing came close. Nothing!

Thanks for bringing old school days memory back. I was doing part time job in my school days in Kiraani store in Bangalore. I remember nestle provided free bonus drink to customer for some days as demonstration (probably in 1994). We used to prepare it at store in big flask and distributing to customer in small glass. I used to distribute less to customer and taking remaining to home to drink with friends…. 🙂 🙂 :)… I was so sad when they stopped free drink demonstration. 😦 :(. Thank you all… Good old school days….

  35. Suman Sarkar says:

yes buddy, I used to have Bonus every morning when I was a little kid. I remember, my grandpa going to market on the 5th every month to get the monthly groceries and coming back with my favourite childhood drink. I remember it was a light-blue box with picture of a cup printed on it. I really enjoyed that drink. Oh good old memories!!!

  36. Shereen says:

    Hai…
I know very well about bonus health drink, at my home my mom still use the blue cap transparant containers of bonus to store lentils and millets…

I drank and finished lots of bottles due to the advice of family doctor since I was under weight and lack of immune.

I too surprised why it got vanished. Because me too missing that pale creamish powder which dissolved completely in milk and made milk ready to drink sugarless….

  37. Ajay says:
